The steady beep was the first sound each morning. It wasn't a jarring alarm, more a gentle insistence, reminding him that the day had begun.
He’d reach for the small device on his nightstand, the smooth plastic cool under his fingertips, and press the button. The beep would cease, replaced by a soft, rhythmic hum that filled the room. Then, he would rise.
His morning ritual was precise. A glass of nutrient-rich liquid from the dispenser, its metallic taste familiar. A series of stretches, each movement slow and deliberate, designed to maintain flexibility.
He'd often observe the street below from his window, watching the figures pass, each engaged in their own quiet routine. Their unhurried pace mirrored his own.
The days unfolded with a comforting predictability. He had a designated task, one that required meticulous attention to detail. Wires, circuits, delicate connections. The glow from the soldering iron was a constant companion, its faint scent a subtle perfume in his sterile workspace.
Sometimes, he’d hear the distant, muffled voices from the adjacent room, indistinct and low, like whispers through a thick wall.
> PROCEED TO CALIBRATION.
> AWAITING OBSERVER...
He rarely interacted with others directly. His instructions arrived through the display panel, concise and clear. He’d execute them without question. Occasionally, a figure in a clean, white suit would enter his space, silently observe his progress, make a note on a datapad, and leave. There was never a need for words.
One evening, the hum in his room faltered, then died completely. The sudden silence was profound, unsettling.
He found himself looking at his hand, then at the still device on his nightstand. For the first time, there was no gentle insistence to start the day, no rhythmic thrum to accompany the quiet hours. He walked to the window. The street below was dark, empty, and silent.
In the morning, the steady beep did not return. The silence persisted. He tried the nutrient dispenser; it was unresponsive. He tried to initiate his stretches, but a strange stiffness prevented fluid movement.
Looking around his room, every surface gleamed. Every object was perfectly positioned. It was then, as he met his reflection in the polished metallic wall, that he noticed...
...the small, etched serial number just above his left eye, and the faint, almost invisible seam running along his jawline.
